CHENNAI: At least 150 Tamil activists were arrested when they tried to stage a protest near state school education minister K C Veeramani's house on Greenways Road at Adyar here on Wednesday morning.
The members of the Joint Committee for Tamil-Based Education, led by its state coordinator Maniyarasan, were protesting against the state government's policy of encouraging English medium schools. They shouted slogans demanding the state government promote Tamil medium schools.
The Chennai police, who got a tip-off about the protest, deployed a huge posse of personnel near the minister's house. Police arrested the protesters when they tried to march towards the minister's house.
The activists were detained at a corporation community hall near Adyar and were booked under Section 151 of the CrPC.
